SCHEID
VINEYARDS INC.
REPORTS
GRAPE PRICES AND COMMENTS ON EL NINO
MARINA DEL REY,
CA. - February 12, 1998 - Scheid Vineyards Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS-SVIN)
announced today
that the Preliminary Grape Crush Report, covering the 1997 harvest,
shows that all of the wine grape prices for varieties it produces were
above prices reported for the same varieties in 1996. The California
Department of Food and Agriculture publishes the Preliminary Grape Crush
Report on February 10 and the Final Grape Crush Report on March 10 each
year. This report shows prices paid during the previous year’s harvest
for grapes purchased for wine, concentrate, juice, vinegar and beverage
brandy by California processors.
Heidi M. Scheid,
Chief Financial Officer of the Company, stated "Approximately 90%
of our wine grapes are sold under contracts which set prices based on
the previous year’s harvest. The Preliminary Grape Crush Report covering
the harvest of 1997 shows that prices for the top three varieties covered
by our contracts (Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) will be
up from 9% to 10% for the harvest of 1998." Although historically
there have not been significant differences in the pricing data reported
in the Preliminary and the Final Grape Crush Reports, it is possible
that there may be some adjustments to the Company’s expected 1998 grape
prices when the Final Report is published next month.
Ms. Scheid also
commented on the effects of El Nino, which has had wide publicity. "El
Nino has had no important adverse effects on our vineyards. It has just
been a rainy winter, and we prefer rain to drought conditions since
the rains tend to decrease our irrigation expenses. None of our vineyards
are on flood plains or near rivers which have recently flooded".
